Types of 3D TV and their pros and cons

The latest craze is 3D TV. Now there are several types of 3D TVs. In stores both active and passive 3D TVs are offered, but which one should you choose? What is the difference and what are the pros and cons?

Basically there are three different types of 3D TVs. Below the three types with their advantages and disadvantages.

  • Active 3D
  • Passive 3D
  • Naked-eye 3D

Active 3D

Active 3D is the first and most developed kind of 3D TV at the moment. Most 3D TVs that you find in stores are active 3D TVs. However, this will be changing as there are a few drawbacks to active 3D. With active 3D TV the 3D effect is caused by active shutter glasses. These glasses allow alternately left and right images by blanking the glasses. Because the television is configured the same, this also shows the left and right images in the same frequency. This simulates a 3D effect in the brains. The disadvantage is that the shutter effect is visible in bright conditions. Also, they are heavy and expensive glasses. As a result, manufacturers are looking for alternatives.

Passive 3D

Passive 3D is the successor of active 3D. In passive 3D the 3D effect is not controlled by the glasses, but through the television. The glasses have two different lenses, each with a different polarization. A polarized layer is attached to the TV, making so one eye only sees the even horizontal lines and the other eye only sees the odd horizontal lines. The advantage is that the glasses are much lighter and cheaper. A major disadvantage is that you have loss of quality, because you only see half the picture lines. I expect the manufacturers will soon have a quick solution by adding extra picture lines.

Naked-eye 3D

The ultimate final solution is of course naked-eye 3D. Manufacturers still have great difficulty with this technique because it still has a very limited viewing angle. In other words, it is not possible to watch 3D with a group of people. The 3D effect is only clearly visible from one position. When manufacturers have solved this problem, there is no reason to watch 3D with glasses.
